Project 1 : Industrialized Building System
In a group of 5-6, we are required to design a 3-storey apartment block using mainly IBS component. Before design , we are required to do a case study on a building that use IBS. Then proceed with the design stage where 1-2 types of apartment units with the size not exceeding 100sqm. The design should incorporated mainly IBS component such as precast wall, blockwork, hollow core slab, precast staircase, toilet pod, prefabricated trusses etc. We are required to calculate the IBS score of the apartment and also produce a video which include the construction method of it.
Learning Outcome :
1. Identify and collect relevant research data.
2. Explain a set of architectural and structural documentation.
3. Relate basic structural elements and structural principles in construction.
4. Analyze and document construction methods and materials.
5. Enable students to assess and understand the methods of calculating the IBS score.
Project 2 : Construction Solutions
It is an integrated project with Design Studio 5 which deals with the analysis and establishment of the structural and the envelope systems of the student’s design to ensure that the design has logical and workable construction systems. We are required to conduct some precedent studies on the recent, complex or unique construction systems that could applied to our design. It must be included for the roof system, structural system and 2 facade design schemes. Then, using the similar systems as the ones in the case studies to design 2 façade design schemes for the current studio design project. 2 Sectional perspectives are required to show the structural system too.
Learning Outcome :
1. Analyse and document construction methods and materials
2. Evaluate existing construction system and detailing of the selected project.
3. Critique issues pertaining to construction principles, materials, techniques, codes of practice, process of assembly, and detailing.
4. Generate alternative construction solutions by means of sketches and drawings.
